What is Vertical Mapper 3.7 and how can it help you?
Vertical Mapper 3.7 is a powerful software tool that helps you display, manage and interpret grid-based continuous spatial information. It works with MapInfo Professional, a leading geographic information system (GIS) software, to help you analyze and visualize your data in new ways.
With Vertical Mapper 3.7, you can create grids, or continuous surfaces of information, from point data by estimating values between known points. You can also perform various operations on grids, such as interpolation, classification, calculation, filtering, smoothing and contouring. You can then display your grids as thematic maps, 3D views, profiles or charts.
Vertical Mapper 3.7 can help you find answers from location-based data, such as:
How does the elevation vary across a terrain?
What is the average rainfall in a region?
Where are the hotspots of crime or disease?
How does the soil quality affect crop yield?
What is the best location for a new facility or service?
Vertical Mapper 3.7 supports various types of grid formats, such as GRD, FLT, ASC, DEM and IMG. It also allows you to import and export grids to other applications, such as Excel, Surfer and ERDAS IMAGINE.

In this article, we will show you some examples of how Vertical Mapper 3.7 can help you with different types of spatial analysis and visualization. We will use some sample data sets that are included with Vertical Mapper 3.7 installation.
Example 1: Creating a grid from point data
Suppose you have a point data set that contains measurements of soil pH at different locations. You want to create a grid that shows the spatial distribution of soil pH across the area. You can use Vertical Mapper 3.7 to create a grid from point data using various interpolation methods, such as inverse distance weighting, kriging, natural neighbor, or spline.
To create a grid from point data using Vertical Mapper 3.7, follow these steps:
Open MapInfo Professional and load the point data set. In this example, we will use the SoilpH.TAB file from the \Samples\Vertical Mapper\SoilpH folder.
Open the Vertical Mapper toolbar and click on the Grid Manager button.
In the Grid Manager dialog box, click on the New Grid button.
In the New Grid dialog box, select Point Data as the source type and click Next.
Select the point data set (SoilpH.TAB) and the column that contains the values to be interpolated (PH). Click Next.
Select the interpolation method and adjust the parameters as needed. In this example, we will use inverse distance weighting with a power of 2 and a search radius of 1000 meters. Click Next.
Specify the grid settings, such as cell size, boundary, projection, and file name. In this example, we will use a cell size of 50 meters and save the grid as SoilpH.GRD in the same folder as the point data set. Click Next.
Review the summary of the grid creation and click Finish.
The grid will be created and displayed in a new map window. You can change the display options of the grid, such as color scheme, legend, transparency, or labels, by right-clicking on the grid layer in the Layer Control window and selecting Layer Properties.
